Shizukiyama Kofun
The Shizuhata-yama Kofun is located on the southern ridge of Mount Shizuhata, which juts out from the center of the Shizuoka Plain.Excavations conducted in 1949 revealed that the kofun is a circular mound approximately 32 meters in diameter and 7 meters high. Inside, there is a massive horizontal chamber stone chamber constructed by stacking boulders, and within this chamber, a large hollowed-out house-shaped stone coffin was found.Although few human remains or grave goods were found inside the stone coffin, a rich variety of grave goods—including pottery, weapons, armor, and horse tack—were unearthed from the area surrounding the coffin. The burial mound is believed to be the tomb of the most powerful local clan leader in the region during the 6th century. Based on the findings of this survey, the importance of the Shizukiyama Kofun was recognized, and it was designated as a National Historic Site in 1953.
The structure of the burial mound was reconfirmed through excavation surveys, and from fiscal year 1993 to fiscal year 1996, preservation and restoration work was carried out to restore it to its original state at the time of construction.
