Suruga Kite: Kite-hachi
It is said that Suruga kites originated during the Warring States period, when a retainer of Lord Imagawa Yoshimoto (1519–1560) created and flew one to celebrate a military victory. Kite Hachi is a specialty shop that has been manufacturing and selling Suruga kites using traditional methods for five generations, dating back to the late Edo period.
Suruga kites are characterized by their distinctive gill-like shape at the bottom and their vivid, large-scale designs centered on a face, ensuring they are easily recognizable even when flying high in the sky. The designs primarily fall into three categories: warrior paintings, Kabuki paintings, and child paintings, featuring historical figures, theatrical characters, and storybook characters beloved by the people of the Edo period.
