Shizuoka City Museum of History Special Exhibition: "500 Years After His Death: Sengoku Warlord Imagawa Ujichika"

This is the first comprehensive exhibition to shed light on the true nature and achievements of Imagawa Ujichika!

 Imagawa Ujichika (1473–1526) was the father of Imagawa Yoshimoto (1519–1560) and a military commander who laid the foundation for the Imagawa clan, a Sengoku-period daimyo family based in Sunpu (Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City).With the support of his uncle, Ise Sōzui (Hōjō Sōun), Ujichika succeeded to the headship of the Imagawa clan and ruled over the provinces of Suruga (central Shizuoka Prefecture), Tōtōmi (western Shizuoka Prefecture), and eastern Mikawa (eastern Aichi Prefecture). He also established the “Imagawa Kana Mokuroku,” a set of laws governing the division of the domain, thereby creating an advanced system of domain administration.The year 2026 marks the 500th anniversary of Ujichika’s death. To commemorate this occasion, we will introduce Ujichika’s life, his policies, and the legacy he left for future generations.

<Highlights>

● We will display numerous valuable historical documents, including Shizuoka City-designated cultural properties such as the *Nikai-ki* (a record of the Meio Earthquake, a major earthquake that occurred in the early Warring States period), and the *Suruga Date Documents* (records of the Suruga samurai who served Ujichika).

● Treasures from Zōzen-ji, Ujichika’s family temple, and Shibaya-ji, founded by the renga poet Sōchō, will be on display. We will introduce the world of Imagawa culture surrounding Ujichika.

● We will introduce castles associated with the Imagawa clan, such as Atagoyama Castle and Ogawa Castle, alongside archaeological artifacts, and explore the era of Ujichika through the castles that supported Suruga during the Warring States period.
