Utoki: The Birthplace of Wasabi Cultivation
In Yutogi, there is a large wasabi field known as “Wasabi Mountain.” It is believed that wasabi cultivation in Japan originated here, when people began transplanting and cultivating wasabi that grew wild near this area in the early Edo period.
In front of “Utsurogi,” a facility selling local products, stands a monument marking “The Birthplace of Wasabi Cultivation.” At “Utsurogi,” visitors can enjoy local specialties such as fresh wasabi, pickled wasabi, and handmade soba noodles. The facility also offers hands-on workshops for making pickled wasabi and handmade soba noodles.
In March 2018, “Traditional Cultivation of Shizuoka Water Wasabi” was designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). As the birthplace of traditional water wasabi cultivation and Japan’s leading wasabi-producing region, the Yutogi area has gained worldwide recognition for its traditions and history.
