This Rinzai Zen temple serves as the family temple of the Imagawa clan. It is where Lord Ieyasu (Takachiyo) lived as a hostage and devoted himself to his studies and spiritual training under the guidance of Sekisai. The “Handwriting Practice Room” where the young Lord Ieyasu studied, the garden designated as a National Scenic Spot, and the Main Hall (Daikōjō), designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, have been carefully preserved. The temple is open to the public only during special viewings in spring and autumn.

After exploring the history associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, take a trip back in time to the Yayoi period, some 2,000 years ago! The Toro Ruins, featured in school textbooks, are a nationally designated Special Historic Site and a prime example of an ancient settlement. Here, you can get a sense of life in those days through the reconstructed pit dwellings, elevated storage sheds, and expansive rice paddies. At the adjacent Toro Museum, visitors can participate in hands-on activities such as fire-starting and planting ancient rice, as well as view exhibits of artifacts unearthed at the site.

"Shimizu Minato Festival" 

Shizuoka City’s largest festival, which brings color to the summer at Shimizu Port. The famous "Minato Kappore Group Dance" welcomes spontaneous participants, filling the city with excitement. Combined with approximately 10,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky and a variety of parades, the port town comes together in a lively celebration.

"Abe River Fireworks Festival"

Shizuoka City’s premier fireworks festival, originally held to honor war victims and express hopes for reconstruction. Approximately 15,000 fireworks, including massive "shakudama" shells and star mines, light up the night sky, creating a bustling summer tradition in Shizuoka City alongside the stalls lining the riverbank.

"Shizuoka Festival"

A festival representing spring in Shizuoka City, named after the historical tale that "Lord Ieyasu held a cherry blossom viewing here in Sunpu with his vassals." The "Great Lord’s Cherry Blossom Viewing Procession," in which a group dressed as the Great Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu parades through the city accompanied by the Lady of the Household and the daimyo, is a truly spectacular sight, transforming the cityscape into a living historical scroll.

An international event held during the Cannes Film Festival (May), stemming from the city’s sister-city relationship with Cannes, France.
