[Lunch] Chojiya

A taste that has remained unchanged for 400 years

A specialty restaurant serving tororo soup, established in 1596.

Featured in Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e print “Mariko” from the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō” series, this legendary establishment is said to have been visited by the famous travelers Yaji and Kita.

The signature "tororo soup" is a deeply flavorful dish made by combining Shizuoka-grown yam with homemade white miso and simmered tuna broth.

Pour this umami-rich tororo soup generously over barley rice and dig in heartily—the flavor of the yam and the richness of the broth will fill your mouth.

The restaurant also houses a museum, featuring a lineup of exhibits that evoke the atmosphere of the era, including works and travel gear associated with Matsuo Basho, Jippensha Ikku, and Utagawa Hiroshige.

Kunō Strawberry Coast Road

The heat from the stone walls brings out the sweetness. The birthplace of "tourist strawberry picking," a tradition spanning 120 years

Overlooking Suruga Bay, "Kuno Strawberry Coast Road" is a famous strawberry destination known for its "stone wall cultivation" method, which is rare even on a national scale.

This farming method utilizes the solar heat stored in the stone walls to produce "Ishigaki Strawberries" that are surprisingly sweet and intensely fragrant, even in the dead of winter.

The appeal of the representative variety grown here, "Akihime," lies in its low acidity and melt-in-your-mouth softness.

Due to their delicate nature, long-distance transport is difficult, and it is said that the taste of fully ripened strawberries can only be enjoyed locally.

In addition, the streets are lined with stylish cafes where you can enjoy strawberry desserts, as well as restaurants serving dishes featuring the flavors of Suruga Bay.

Why not refresh yourself from the fatigue of driving while listening to the sound of the waves?

Funabashi Saori

There’s a reason for its shape! The legendary manju that Jirocho Shimizu crushed

Founded in 1808, the long-established shop "Funabashi-sha Orie" is home to the famous "Yubi Manju," a confection that has been loved for generations.

The name originates from a surprising anecdote from long ago: Shimizu Jirocho appeared at the factory, declared, “These aren’t fit for sale!” and proceeded to squish the manju one after another with his fingers before taking them away to distribute to children.

There are two varieties: "Koshian" (smooth red bean paste), which has a dent in the center, and "Misoan" (miso-flavored bean paste), shaped as if pinched from the side—a treat packed with unique history.

Since they’re sold individually, we recommend buying both varieties and comparing them during a road trip!

Shimizu Port Boat House Memorial Hall "Suehiro"

The Jirocho Boat House Memorial Museum, dedicated to Jirocho, who contributed greatly to the development of Shimizu Port

This memorial hall is a reconstruction of "Suehiro," the boat inn operated in his later years by Jirocho Shimizu—a legendary outlaw who was active from the late Edo period through the Meiji era—to promote the development of Shimizu Port.

It preserves the story of his turbulent life, from his days as a young gang leader to his transformation into a social entrepreneur following the Meiji Restoration.

Inside the museum, valuable materials are on display, including scenes from Jirocho’s English school at the time and his personal belongings.

You’ll be amazed by Jirocho’s foresight in learning English and looking toward the world.

During your visit, be sure to stop by the café corner to enjoy a set of "Yubi Manju"—a famous confection named after an anecdote about Jirocho—paired with matcha tea.

As you feel the sea breeze, let your thoughts wander to the romance of a man who sought to pioneer a new era.

Miho Matsubara

"The Original Japanese Landscape" Beloved by Utagawa Hiroshige

During the Taisho era, Miho Matsubara was designated as Japan’s first Place of Scenic Beauty.

In 2013, it was also registered as a component part of the World Cultural Heritage site “Mount Fuji,” truly a pristine landscape of which Japan is proud.

The contrast created by the pine grove—estimated to contain some 30,000 trees—the blue waters and white waves of Suruga Bay, and the majestic Mount Fuji is a scene of beauty straight out of a ukiyo-e print by Utagawa Hiroshige.

As you walk through the pine grove listening to the sound of the waves, the scenery that moved travelers of old unfolds before your eyes.

The “Hagoromo Pine” is a must-see.

It is the setting for the Hagoromo legend, which depicts the encounter between a celestial maiden and a fisherman, and the row of pine trees leading from there to Miho Shrine is called the “Path of the Gods.”

In 2019, the visitor center “Mihoshirube” also opened.

Through videos and exhibits, you can easily learn about the history of Miho Matsubara and its connection to Mount Fuji.

"Why was this place selected as a World Heritage Site?"

Once you understand the reason, the pine grove and Mount Fuji will surely resonate in your heart as a scene of exceptional beauty.

Nihondaira once took first place in the “Top 100 Tourist Destinations in Japan” contest.

"Nihondaira Yume Terrace" is an observation facility built on its summit (elevation approx. 300 m) in 2018.

The view from the third-floor observation deck and the approximately 200-meter-long outdoor observation corridor is truly a breathtaking panorama.

You can enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree view stretching from Mount Fuji to Suruga Bay, Miho no Matsubara, and the Izu Peninsula.

Furthermore, at night, you can enjoy the magical twinkling lights recognized as a “Japan Night View Heritage” site.

Kuno-zan Toshogu Shrine

A sacred site associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. A National Treasure shrine building overlooking Suruga Bay

This shrine marks the founding of Tōshō-gū, where the remains of the late Tokugawa Ieyasu were first enshrined in accordance with his will.

The shrine building, entirely lacquered and painted in vivid colors, served as the prototype for the Gongen-zukuri style and has been designated a National Treasure for its splendor and historical significance.

Another attraction is the breathtaking view overlooking Suruga Bay.

There are two routes to the shrine.

If you’re confident in your stamina, we recommend the Omotesando route, which involves climbing 1,159 stone steps from the base of the mountain.

Affectionately known for the pun “Ichigo-ichigo kuro-san” (one step, one reward), this path allows you to savor a sense of accomplishment amidst the tranquility.

In particular, the view of Suruga Bay from the “First Gate” at the 909th step is so breathtaking that you’ll instinctively stop in your tracks to take it in.

On the other hand, if you take the ropeway from the summit of Nihondaira, you can reach the shrine building with ease while enjoying a scenic ride through the air.

A luxurious panorama awaits, offering a simultaneous view of Suruga Bay spreading out below and the majestic Mount Fuji.

The adjacent museum houses a collection of approximately 2,000 cultural artifacts, including Lord Ieyasu’s armor and a national treasure sword.

It is a sacred site representing Shizuoka, where history, breathtaking scenery, and the treasures of a legendary ruler converge.

Experience it for yourself at the mecca of saunas! Find ultimate relaxation in the miraculous cold plunge pool

A true mecca for sauna enthusiasts (sauners) across the country, who all dream of visiting one day.

What solidifies its popularity is the “Miracle Cold Plunge Pool,” which luxuriously flows with natural spring water drawn from deep underground.

Take home the legendary "Three Great Specialties of Suruga" that even Edo locals loved

"Usagi Mochi" is one of the three great specialties of Suruga, beloved even by the Edo locals of old. Though it once disappeared from the scene, swept away by the tides of time, Matsukiya has passionately revived this flavor for the modern era.

The dough, made with mochi flour, offers an exquisite balance of a chewy, sticky texture and a light, airy mouthfeel.

It features a branding iron design inspired by the full moon in the night sky and is generously filled with smooth red bean paste. With a light, delightful flavor that feels as if a rabbit is hopping, it makes the perfect souvenir.

[Dinner] Shizuoka Oden Street (Aoba Oden Street, Aoba Yokocho)

Take a trip back to the Showa era! A famous alleyway serving Shizuoka-style oden with rich, flavorful broth

"Aoba Oden Street" and "Aoba Yokocho" are popular spots where you can enjoy "Shizuoka Oden," the soul food of Shizuoka City.

The countless red lanterns swaying among the skyscrapers and the nostalgic scenery, reminiscent of a trip back to the Showa era, stir a sense of travel excitement the moment you step inside.

The essence of Shizuoka Oden lies in its jet-black broth, carefully maintained by continuously adding beef tendon and dark soy sauce.

Contrary to its striking appearance, the broth has a deep richness yet a mellow flavor.

The flavor slowly permeates the ingredients, such as the famous “black hanpen” (*), and when finished with “dashi powder” and green laver, the aroma of the sea whets your appetite.

Huddling together at the small counter and enjoying conversation with the owner and regulars is a unique pleasure of the alleyway.

Please enjoy a Shizuoka evening that warms both your heart and body.
