Akamizu Falls
[3:30 PM] Umegashima Falls, with its beautiful autumn foliage
Akamizu Falls is a massive waterfall with a drop of 50 meters that can be viewed from an observation deck along Prefectural Route 29, the “Abe Kaido,” on the way to Umegashima Onsen.
It is said to have been formed when the Abe River was dammed after the Oya Ridge collapsed during the great earthquake and flood of 1707 (the 4th year of the Hoei era). The waterfall earned its name because, at the time of the collapse, it continued to flow with water that had been stained red.
During the autumn foliage season, the surrounding trees turn red and yellow, and in mid-November, the area is illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the autumn colors and the fantastical sight of the waterfall glowing against the darkness. Parking is available.

Abe's Otaki
[Customized Itinerary] Hiking to the Waterfall
This is Abe no Otaki, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Located in the headwaters of the Abe River, it’s a popular hiking destination in the Umegashima area; it takes about an hour to reach the Otaki observation deck from the prefectural road (Umegashima Kaido).
Abe no Otaki boasts a drop of approximately 90 meters and a width of about 4 meters, making it the largest waterfall in the Abe Okucho area. If you go close to the pool at the base of the falls, you can feel the spray on your body and truly appreciate the waterfall’s grandeur.
