Kuno-zan Toshogu Shrine
A National Treasure overlooking the sea, where the shogun who unified Japan is laid to rest
Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who ushered Japan into a long era of peace, spent the final years of his life in Sunpu (now Shizuoka City). Kunozan Toshogu Shrine was built to enshrine Ieyasu. The shrine buildings were constructed using the finest architectural techniques and decorative artistry available in early 17th-century Japan. The vivid colors and intricate carvings are a must-see. Due to their historical and artistic value, the buildings are now designated as National Treasures of Japan.
In addition, the adjacent museum allows visitors to experience Japan’s history—from the Warring States period to the era of peace—through actual artifacts such as armor and works of art.
Approximately 2,000 items are on display, including armor used on the battlefield, ceremonial swords, and portrait sculptures, many of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties or National Treasures.
