This park is located on the site of "Sunpu Castle," where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years as the "Ōgosho" after stepping down from the position of shogun.

Protected by double moats and stone walls, the park serves as a place of relaxation for citizens while conveying the historical significance cherished by the ruler of the land.

The restored "Higashi-gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura" are a must-see.

It has been renovated into an exhibition facility where visitors can delve deeply into the castle’s history based on the latest research.

At the "Hitsujisaru Yagura," which has also been restored using traditional construction methods, you can view the intricate tower structure up close and be awed by the architectural techniques of the time.

Another highlight is the site of the castle keep foundation, one of the largest in Japan, where excavation work is still ongoing. 

The massive stone walls evoke the majestic presence of the great castle that once stood here.

After your stroll, head to the "Momijiyama Garden," which displays different charms with each season.

Savoring tea and traditional Japanese sweets in the tea house allows you to spend an elegant moment feeling like a feudal lord.

Affectionately known as “Osen-gen-sama,” Shizuoka Sengen Shrine is the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu held his coming-of-age ceremony while serving as a hostage to the Imagawa clan—a site often referred to as the “origin of the ruler of the realm,” where he first harbored his grand ambitions.

The shrine grounds are lined with a magnificent complex of shrines, all lacquered and painted in vivid colors.

Its beauty, often described as the “Nikko of the Tokai region,” is truly breathtaking; 26 structures, including the Grand Worship Hall standing 25 meters tall, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. 

Currently, the “Heisei-Reiwa Grand Renovation,” which began in 2014, is underway.

Through this massive project, expected to take about 20 years, the shrine is preserving its beauty and traditions of faith for future generations.

Seven shrines are enshrined within the spacious grounds, centered around the three main shrines: Kanbe Shrine, Asama Shrine, and Otoshimioya Shrine.

The “Seven Shrine Pilgrimage,” which involves visiting all of these, is said to grant “all wishes,” and the grounds are bustling with worshippers walking the path with their hopes and prayers.

The "Takajo" area, which retains the atmosphere of a samurai residence, is a neighborhood perfect for a leisurely stroll, with sophisticated shops and cafes dotted along its quiet alleys.

For lunch, enjoy the exceptionally fresh local seafood dishes served at "Uoya Chokyu," a restaurant directly operated by a fishing company.

Dishes like the "Seasonal Uoyacho Set" and "Seafood Bowl," which feature an abundance of local fish in sashimi and grilled fish, are truly a treasure trove of the sea.
