Akamizu Falls
Akamizu Falls is a massive waterfall with a drop of 50 meters that can be viewed from an observation deck along Prefectural Route 29, the “Abe Kaido,” on the way to Umegashima Onsen.
In 1707 (the 4th year of the Hoei era), a massive earthquake and flood caused the ridges of Mt. Otani to collapse over a 4-kilometer stretch, creating the Otani Landslide—considered one of Japan’s three great landslides. The debris flow that resulted buried the entire downstream area, forming small, elevated plains such as Nitta, Akamizu, Oonoki, and Oozare.Furthermore, the spectacular sight of the brown, muddy torrent carving through the mountainside and crashing down to the waterfall below, accompanied by a rumbling sound, led to it being named “Akamizu Falls.”
During the autumn foliage season, the surrounding trees turn red and yellow, and in mid-November, the area is illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the fantastical sight of the waterfall floating in the darkness against the backdrop of the autumn colors. Parking is available.
