Rinzai-ji Temple

A temple linking the two distinguished families of the Imagawa and Tokugawa

This is the family temple of the Imagawa clan and a prestigious Zen temple where Tokugawa Ieyasu (then known as Takechiyo) was entrusted as a hostage during his childhood and devoted himself to his studies and martial arts.

It is said that Taigen Sessai, the renowned military strategist of the Imagawa clan, recognized Ieyasu’s talent at an early age and taught him the principles of governance (ethical philosophy).

Highlights include the “Study Room,” where Ieyasu is said to have studied, and the Main Hall (Daigajo), designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Furthermore, the garden, designated as a National Scenic Spot, features plum trees associated with Ieyasu standing quietly, vividly preserving the atmosphere of that era.

As it remains a specialized training center where monks still devote themselves to their practice, it is not normally open to the public.

It is a sacred site longed for by history enthusiasts, with its gates opening only twice a year—in spring and autumn—for special public viewings.
