Shizuoka City Museum of History

From the Imagawa to Ieyasu: Experience the History of Sunpu Castle Town

A new hub of learning in Shizuoka City that blends historical exploration with hands-on experiences and cultural exchange.

The permanent exhibition centers on Tokugawa Ieyasu, introducing the region’s rich historical narrative—from the splendid culture of the Imagawa clan, the Sengoku-period daimyo who raised Ieyasu, to the bustling life of the Sunpu castle town.

The highlight of this facility is the “Remains of Roads and Stone Walls from the Late Warring States Period,” which spans the free area on the first floor.

An authentic “road” miraculously discovered during pre-construction excavations is displayed in its original exposed state.

Gazing up close at the very soil that Tokugawa Ieyasu may have walked upon offers a special experience that allows you to feel the atmosphere of that era firsthand.

This facility also serves as a gateway for historical sightseeing.

With a full lineup of guided historical tours of the city on weekends and assistance from concierges, it is the perfect base for deepening your travel experience.
