Fujinokuni Museum of Global Environmental History

Facing "Earth" in a classroom at an abandoned school

A "thinking museum"—a rare concept worldwide—centered on the theme of "the relationship between humans and nature (environmental history)."

Housed in a renovated former high school, the museum retains traces of its former classrooms and hallways, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.

A key feature of this facility is its deliberate decision to keep explanatory text to a minimum.

Specimens of plants, animals, and fossils—carefully selected from a collection of approximately one million items—are displayed as beautifully as works of art.

By experiencing them not through knowledge but with your “five senses” and engaging in quiet reflection, you’ll encounter your own unique discoveries and questions.

After viewing the exhibits, head to the “Earth Family Conference” to discuss the future, the café where you can enjoy coffee surrounded by illustrated field guides, or the nature observation trail in the schoolyard.

Please enjoy a 4.6-billion-year journey through time in this quiet former school building, filled with learning and discovery.
