Stone Steps at Kunozan Toshogu Shrine

Boasting 1,159 steps starting from the stone torii gate at the base of Mount Kunō, the path is known as “Ichigo-go-kurosan” (literally, “one by one, good work”), a play on the number 1,159. Until the Shizuoka Railway Nihondaira Ropeway opened in 1957, these stone steps were the only route to Tōshō-gū Shrine.

The view of Suruga Bay from the First Gate, located 909 steps up, is breathtaking. Mount Kunō stands at an elevation of 270 meters. Please enjoy the spectacular view of Suruga Bay while the sea breeze and the scent of the trees refresh your spirit. At the top of the stone steps, you will be greeted by the magnificent, National Treasure-designated shrine building.
