Johoku Park

This park, a symbol of Shizuoka City, is situated on the site of Sunpu Castle—built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and where he spent his retirement years. Enclosed by double moats and stone walls, the park serves as a place of relaxation for residents while also evoking a sense of its historical significance.

The Higashi-mon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura have been renovated to feature exhibits on “The Life of Sunpu Castle,” incorporating the latest research findings. Additionally, at the Hitsujisaru Yagura—restored using traditional construction methods—visitors can view the three-story, two-tiered yagura structure up close from an open-air atrium.Other must-see spots include the site of the castle keep foundation—one of the largest in Japan, where excavation work is currently underway—and the beautiful Kōyōyama Garden, which offers stunning seasonal foliage.
