Shizuoka City History Museum: Special Exhibition—Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Toyotomi Regime
Ieyasu, the senior retainer who supported Hideyoshi
Tokugawa Ieyasu was a military commander who vied with Toyotomi Hideyoshi for control of the realm, yet he was also a senior retainer who enjoyed Hideyoshi’s trust and supported the Toyotomi regime. This exhibition explores the relationship between Ieyasu and the Toyotomi regime, focusing on valuable historical materials preserved in Shizuoka.Featuring over 100 items—including the Important Cultural Property “Ietada’s Diary” and the “Tachi Sword inscribed ‘Nagafune-ju Nagamitsu’”—as well as historical documents, swords, and gold-leaf roof tiles from Sunpu Castle, the exhibition presents Ieyasu’s journey across seven chapters: from the construction of Sunpu Castle and his rule over the Five Provinces, through Hideyoshi’s rule over Suruga, to the Battle of Sekigahara and his eventual rise to become the ruler of all Japan. We examine the turbulent era of transition from the Sengoku period to the Edo period through the lens of the little-known relationship between Ieyasu and the Toyotomi regime.
