Shimizu Port
Suruga Bay is home to the Suruga Trench, which reaches a depth of 2,500 meters, making it known as Japan’s deepest bay. With Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain, overlooking Japan’s deepest sea, it’s fair to say that this breathtaking view—one that would make even the gods envious—was destined to exist.
The scenery reflected by this sea and the land surrounding it has been a source of longing for people since ancient times. If you wish to fully savor this luxury, your first stop should be Shimizu Port. In addition to the Suruga Bay Ferry that crosses to Toi Port on the Izu Peninsula, Shimizu Port offers sightseeing boats, chartered sailing ships, and water buses to transport us to this sea of breathtaking beauty.
The Suruga Bay Ferry, now known as "Marine Prefectural Route 223," connects Shimizu Port and Toi Port on the western coast of Izu in about an hour each way. Shimizu Port is a great place to enjoy a casual boat trip.
A one-hour boat ride on the Suruga Bay Ferry. Float on Suruga Bay, Japan’s deepest bay, and gaze upon Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain.
This is a bay cruise in Shimizu Port. The sightseeing boat, the Bay Promenade, offers 35-minute and 45-minute tours. There are also cruises that include lunch.
Large cruise ships also call at the port. Along with Nagasaki and Kobe, Shimizu Port is one of Japan’s three most beautiful ports and welcomes visitors from overseas.
When a large cruise ship arrives, a welcome event is held at Hinode Pier. It attracts not only the passengers who have disembarked but also many other people, making it a bustling occasion.
Shimizu Port in the early morning. There’s no shortage of great spots for taking photos.
Shimizu Marine Park is home to a “mechanical heritage” site: a talc crane. Once used to load lumber onto railway cars, it helped transform Shimizu Port into Japan’s leading timber unloading port. It blends beautifully with the port’s scenery.
Espal Dream Plaza. With a shopping mall, sushi restaurants, a movie theater, Chibi Maruko-chan Land, and a Ferris wheel, there’s something for people of all ages to enjoy.
The "Chari Miho II" is a water bus that allows passengers to bring their bicycles on board. Bicycle rentals are also available at the boarding area.
I’d like to use the “Chari Miho II” water bus as a way to reach Miho Matsubara by sea.
The Ocean Princess is a historic luxury sailing ship that once carried world-renowned figures on cruises across the Mediterranean. You can charter it exclusively for your own use. It would make for a truly unforgettable experience for a class reunion.
When you mention Shimizu Port, you think of Jirocho of Shimizu. Saying that might give away my age. The photo shows the Shimizu Port Boat House Memorial Hall “Suehiro,” a reconstruction of Jirocho’s boat house located near the port.
