Sushi, Seafood, Wasabi

"When you think of tuna, what comes to mind?" I’ve never met anyone who answered "Shizuoka City" to that question. Yet, among those in the know, it’s a well-kept secret that Shizuoka City has the highest volume of frozen tuna landings in Japan. It’s also said that Shizuoka City ranks first nationwide in annual per-household spending on tuna. Furthermore, the manufacturers of those canned tuna products sold everywhere across the country are concentrated in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City.Since canned tuna is made from tuna, this also means that the tuna from Shimizu Port is sold all over the country. Hearing this, you’ll realize that calling Shimizu a “town of tuna” is no exaggeration at all—in fact, you’ll want to shout from the rooftops that Shimizu is the very embodiment of a tuna town.

If you’re determined to try both the sakura shrimp from Yui Fishing Port and the tuna from Shimizu Port, there’s one more fishing port in Shizuoka City you mustn’t forget: Mochimune Fishing Port, located at the westernmost point. This is where the shirasu (baby sardines) are caught. Fresh shirasu, eaten with a smooth, slippery texture and dipped in ginger soy sauce, is another exquisite delicacy unique to Shizuoka City.

The tuna landed at Shimizu Port is frozen deep-sea tuna. "It actually tastes better than freshly caught tuna," say the connoisseurs.

The Espuls Dream Plaza in Shimizu Port is home to the "Shimizu Sushi Museum" and "Shimizu Sushi Yokocho."

At a shop called "Taoryo Market" located within the same Espal Dream Plaza, they also put on tuna-cutting demonstrations for groups.

The Kashi no Ichi Fish Market features the "Ichiba Hall" for shopping and the "Maguro Hall" for dining. It's just a stone's throw from JR Shimizu Station and is within walking distance.

You can find truly delicious, high-quality sushi—the kind you’d expect at a luxury restaurant—even at ordinary places you’d likely find all over Shizuoka City.

It’s not necessarily true that only bluefin tuna is delicious, but bluefin tuna really is delicious.

A scene from the "Shimizu Port Tuna Festival." Could it be that they're actually serving free tuna sashimi?

Wasabi is an essential accompaniment to sushi and sashimi. This is freshly harvested wasabi.

Utoki, located upstream on the Abe River, is the birthplace of wasabi cultivation. It produces wasabi of the highest quality.

This is Motomune Fishing Port in western Shizuoka City, known for its shirasu fishing. Every year, from mid-March to mid-January of the following year, the fishermen are out at sea for nearly a year.

"Donburi House" at Mochimune Fishing Port. On days when the shirasu fishing fleet is out at sea, you can enjoy a bowl of fresh shirasu rice at the port. They also serve bowls of boiled shirasu and tuna rice bowls.
