Nihondaira: Japan's Most Spectacular View
Located on the northern side of Mount Kunō, on the border between Shizuoka City’s Suruga Ward and Shimizu Ward, Nihondaira is designated as a National Scenic Spot. It first earned the reputation as Japan’s premier scenic spot in 1950, drawing attention from across the country as a location offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and Shimizu Port.
Of course, that breathtaking view remains unchanged, just as it always has. The scenery as it shifts from morning to noon and then into night will transport you to a moment of pure bliss, as if you were in heaven itself.
At sunrise. Mount Fuji glows bright red in the morning sun.
This is a night view. The silhouette of Mount Fuji slowly fades into the night sky.
The entrance to the Nihondaira Hotel. Whenever I come to stay here, I always pray, “I hope it’ll be sunny.”
A view of Mount Fuji and Kiyomizu Port in summer from the restaurant at Nihondaira Hotel.
The hotel rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows on the side facing the street. Time passes in pure bliss, as if you have the night view all to yourself.
A statue of Yamato Takeru, who is said to have once climbed this mountain. The name "Nihondaira" is derived from "Yamato Takeru." He is holding the "Sword of Kusanagi," and on the slopes of Nihondaira stands Kusanagi Shrine, which is associated with the legend of Yamato Takeru.
There is also the statue of the mother and daughter in red shoes from "From the Pier in Yokohama..." It seems that the little girl in the children's song was modeled after a real-life girl named Kimi Iwasaki, who was born in Shimizu.
Mount Fuji, tea fields, and Shimizu Port. All the elements that make Shizuoka City—formerly known as Sunpu—feel like paradise are right here.
From mid-April through October, you can also try your hand at tea picking at the Tea Hall on the mountaintop.
His heartfelt narration almost brought tears to my eyes. The Nihondaira Ropeway, where the guides are so kind.
A five-minute flight from Nihondaira to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Below lies the deep Byobu Valley.
On the roof of the building housing the Nihondaira Ropeway Station, there is also a monument dedicated to the folk song "Chakkiribushi."
