Hikagezawa Gold Mine Ruins
This gold mine flourished most during the time when Tokugawa Ieyasu served as the Grand Elder in Sunpu. It is said that the “Keichō Koban”—Japan’s first standardized currency, minted at the Sunpu Gold Mint—was also produced using gold mined here.Starting from the Hikagezawa Waterfront Park “Uo-Uo no Sato,” this course takes just over an hour to complete. Along the way, you can see the ruins of the mine that likely enriched the Tokugawa shogunate’s finances during the Edo period, the former residences of the gold miners, Hachiman Shrine and the shrine dedicated to the Mountain God, as well as the graves of the miners who likely passed away at a young age due to the harsh labor.and the site of the magistrate’s residence. However, the trail includes some fairly steep inclines and a suspension bridge.

Uo-Uo no Sato → (30 min) → Ruins of Hachiman Shrine → (10 min) → Mine Shaft Ruins / Mountain God Shrine Junction → (5 min) → Momiji Bridge → (10 min) → Buddha Mountain → (20 min) → Ruins of the Magistrate’s Residence → (5 min) → Return to Uo-Uo no Sato
