Okitsu Zagyosho Memorial Hall

The hideaway of the last member of the Genrō, which served as the setting for "Okitsu Mairi"

Prince Kinmochi Saionji, the last of the Genrō, supported the nation during the turbulent period from the Meiji to the Shōwa eras.

This villa, "Zagyosō," was built for him to spend his later years, embodying his wish to "sit back, relax, and spend his days fishing."

However, contrary to its name, political figures, including prime ministers, visited here one after another, and important national policies were discussed.

It was the stage for what came to be known as the “Okitsu Pilgrimage,” and this quiet seaside town effectively became the center of Japanese politics.

The building features an elegant “Kyoto-style Sukiya-zukuri” design.

Although it was once lost due to deterioration, it was faithfully restored based on the original blueprints and has been open to the public since 2004.

In this serene space, where you can almost hear the sound of the waves, take a moment to reflect on the footsteps of the politicians who worried about Japan’s future course.
