Yamadaichi: The Home of Toro Mochi

At the Tōro Ruins, just west of the Serizawa Art Museum, a waterwheel turns leisurely.

The shop—a relocated Aizu farmhouse built roughly 200 years ago—and the large waterwheel create a charming, atmospheric setting.

Here, you can enjoy the famous “Abekawa Mochi,” freshly steamed and made to order. The warm mochi, paired with refined sweet red bean paste and fragrant kinako (roasted soybean flour), is truly exquisite and a taste of tradition.

The “Karami Mochi” is topped with grated daikon radish and wasabi, offering a refreshingly spicy kick. Enjoy it with a light wasabi soy sauce dip—it pairs perfectly with a delicious cup of tea.

The menu also features popular hand-made soba noodles and a chestnut rice set meal, offering a variety of savory options beyond sweets.

The first floor features an irori (traditional sunken hearth), with seating arranged around it. The round table in the center of the second floor is actually the bottom of a 40-koku sake barrel once used in a sake brewery. While it no longer carries the scent of sake, it is displayed alongside other antique tools. Abe River Mochi is also available for purchase as a souvenir inside the shop.
