Satta Pass, Tōkaidō
If we look at the scene at Yui-juku in Utagawa Hiroshige’s *Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō* (Hōeidō edition), the mountain pass that should be there is depicted as nothing but a sheer cliff, and the three figures in the upper left appear as if they are about to tumble down the 45-degree slope at any moment. Hiroshige used a bold composition filled with tension to convey just how treacherous this spot was.
It is said that safe passage along the coastline, bypassing the treacherous Satta Pass, became possible only after the great earthquake of 1854 (Kaei 7) caused the coastline to rise.
Today, major construction projects have repeatedly transformed that narrow coastal strip, and Japan’s major arteries—the Tokaido Main Line, National Route 1, and the Tomei Expressway—run through it as if bundled together.
While the coastline remains an immensely popular spot for viewing Mount Fuji, if you climb halfway up Mt. Satta, which juts out into Suruga Bay, and stand at Satta Pass, you can see with your own eyes the spectacular view that Hiroshige depicted. An observation deck has also been built at the pass.
Satta Pass, the most spectacular view along the Tōkaidō, is bustling with hikers.
